Farmers in Dinajpur achieve success in cultivating the high-yielding, zinc-rich BR-102 rice variety

Dinajpur, May 31, 2025 : Farmers of the district have succeeded in cultivating a new variety of high-yielding and zinc-rich Boro rice, Bri-102. This rice was cultivated experimentally in the district this year. Agronomists and rice researchers are hoping that the cultivation of this rice will revolutionize agriculture.

Dinajpur Department of Agriculture Extension Deputy Director (Research and Training) Md. Anisuzzaman told BSS that the Department of Agriculture has cultivated Boro rice of the Bri-102 variety developed by the Agriculture Department on 220 hectares of land in the district this year on an experimental basis. Some farmers in the district were motivated to cultivate this rice and the rice was cultivated on an experimental basis.

The Dinajpur Women's Multipurpose Education Center (MBSK) implemented this program with the funding and technical assistance of PKSF Agriculture Unit. The BR-102 variety of rice was experimentally cultivated in six upazilas of the district including Sadar, Birol, Chirir Bandar, Khansama, Kaharol and Phulbari. Farmers have achieved great success in cultivating the newly invented BR-102 variety of rice.

It can be seen on the ground that farmer Md. Golam Mostafa has cultivated this variety of rice on 50 percent of land in a demonstration plot in Danihari village of Kamalpur Union No. 10 of Sadar Upazila. The yield of rice on one percent of the land has been more than one maund.

The Agriculture Department says that this variety has given the highest yield among the thin rice varieties so far. In addition, this new variety of rice does not have diseases and pests like other conventional varieties of rice. The rice of this long-grain and thin variety of rice is neat and delicious to eat. The Agriculture Department hopes that farmers will benefit from cultivating this high-yielding rice.

Hossain Md. Abu Sufian, agricultural officer of Sadar Upazila of the non-governmental aid organization MBSK, said that with the seed cooperation of the PKSF Agricultural Unit and the implementation of MBSK, a few farmers have cultivated the new high-yielding and zinc-rich Boro season variety Bri-102 for the first time in Sadar Upazila. The ears of this rice are very nutritious and weigh a lot more. The cost of cultivating this variety of rice is low. Diseases and pests are also comparatively very low. This rice can be cultivated as an alternative to Bri Dhan-29 or Chikon variety.

He said, "Many farmers in the area have been inspired to cultivate this new variety of rice due to its high yield. This time, some farmers have cultivated this high-yielding Chikon rice in their land. Seeing the high yield of this new variety of rice, I hope that many farmers will cultivate this rice on more land in the future."

Md. Golam Mostafa, a farmer from Danihari village in Kamalpur union of Sadar upazila, said, "This time I have cultivated this new variety of rice, Bri-102, on one and a half bighas, or 50 hundredths of land. This long and thin variety of rice has given the highest yield in my demonstration plot. I have never seen such a high yield of thin rice before in my life. It is safe to say that there are no diseases or pests in this rice cultivation. Next year I will cultivate this new variety of rice on 3 bighas of land."

He said, "Seeing the high yield of this new variety of fine rice, many farmers have expressed interest in cultivating it next year. Many farmers have asked me for seeds of this rice."

Dinajpur Agricultural Extension Department Deputy Director Md. Afzal Hossain said, the farmers were encouraged to cultivate the new variety of rice BR-102, which is high-yielding and rich in zinc. This rice was cultivated on 220 hectares of land in the district this year. I hope that the farmers will be encouraged to see the high yield in this experimental rice cultivation. The cultivation of this new variety of fine rice will also increase next year.

He said that Bangladesh Rice Research Institute released the zinc-rich high-yielding BR-102 variety of rice for cultivation for the Boro season on January 18, 2022. Since then, experimental cultivation has been started across the country to increase the production of this thin rice. So far, farmers have obtained high yields by cultivating BR-102 variety of rice in all districts. In the next Boro season, BR-102 variety of rice seeds will be sold to farmers for cultivation from the BRDC Seed Division of the Agriculture Department.
