Farmers in Sreepur, Gazipur are delighted with the successful harvest of the China-3 variety of litchi



 Gazipur, May 22, 2025:- The farmers of Sreepur Upazila of the district are smiling with the harvest of the indigenous China-3 variety of litchi, the fruit of their dreams. 

In various villages of 1 municipality and 8 unions of the upazila, there is now a lot of activity around litchi. It seems like a litchi festival is going on in every village. Guarding the litchis at night to protect them from bats and taking them down from the trees with family members, tying them in bundles and taking them to the local market in a car. This is how most of the people of Sreepur upazila are spending their time busy around litchis.

The juicy litchi of Sreepur, which is rich in high-altitude land, is appreciated across the country. About 12,000 farmers across the upazila conduct economic activities around this litchi. This time, due to the absence of natural disasters, there has been a good harvest of other litchis including the China-3 variety in this upazila. As a result, the farmers of this area are now busy around litchi.

According to the Upazila Agricultural Extension Department, the largest amount of litchi is cultivated in Sreepur Upazila. Since Sreepur's litchi is different in terms of taste, its demand is also high. This time, litchi is cultivated on 730 hectares of land in Sreepur Upazila. The target for litchi production this year has been set at 3,890 metric tons. 

Meanwhile, the demand for litchi in Sreepur is constantly increasing, and litchi cultivation is expanding throughout this upazila every year. In this litchi cultivation, the varieties also change with the changing tastes of the farmers. China-3, Bombay and Pati litchi are cultivated here. 

Manik Mia, a litchi farmer from Tepirbari village in Telihati union of the upazila, said, "This time, the litchi yield has been very good as the litchi trees have not been damaged by natural disasters after the buds appeared. I am hoping to get a higher price as well."

Manik Mia has planted litchi trees of the indigenous China-3 variety. He has 30 litchi trees, including the China-3 variety. Last year, he sold litchi for 250,000 taka. This time, he hopes to sell litchi for 350,000 taka.

Jalal Faraji of Ward No. 6 of Kewa East Block of Sreepur Municipality said, "This year, there has been a bumper harvest of litchi. Farmers and traders collect litchi produced in the gardens from the gardens and take them to local markets for sale. However, many people also go to the capital in the hope of getting a good price. Litchi is available throughout the month of Jyishta. This time, the harvest and price are getting better than other times. He sold litchi from 25 trees for 1 lakh 60 thousand taka.

Sumaiya Sultana Bonya, agricultural officer of the Sreepur Upazila Agricultural Extension Department, told BSS, "We have been encouraging local farmers to expand litchi cultivation for several years, so litchi cultivation is constantly increasing commercially. This time, despite the intense heat across the upazila, there has been a good yield of litchi."
