Heavy rains submerge crops in Rangpur

Continuous rains in Rangpur have submerged crops, raising fears of widespread crop damage. However, the Agriculture Office claims that there is no danger of crop damage if the water recedes quickly.

According to the Rangpur Meteorological Office, 88 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in the district till 10 am on Wednesday (May 21). About 250 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in the previous two days.

Due to continuous rains, the low-lying areas, alleys and roads of Rangpur city have been submerged in water. About 20-25 villages in the low-lying areas of the city are now knee-deep in water. Not only the city or the port, but also the village's crop fields, fish ponds, and vegetable fields are all under water.

In many places in Rangpur, paddy threshing has not been completed yet. Although some have harvested paddy, they have not been able to thresh it due to the rain. As a result, there is a fear of paddy being spoiled. Some people's paddy is under water. Farmers in that area have said that if the water does not recede within a day or two, it will not be possible to harvest that paddy.

Ranipukur in Mithapukur, a famous vegetable town in Rangpur Upazila, is now just water and sighs. The fields of Nayapara, Tajnagar, Afzalpur, Bhaktipur and Baldipukur villages in Ranipukur Union are now like small rivers. When you go to the fields, you can see no sign of crops, only stagnant water.

The entire crop field has been submerged after several days of heavy rain. Paddy, ginger, vegetables are all now under water. This has created a look of panic in the eyes and faces of the farmers, because the crops of that land were their only hope.

Mostafa Mia of Purbapara area of Ranipukur said, "I have worked hard to mortgage my land and take loans to cultivate it, but after a few days of rain, everything is gone. All hopes of livelihood this season are gone. One acre of land has kankorol, one acre of bitter gourd, and cucumbers are all under water. If it remains under water for another two days, the trees will start dying. Meanwhile, there is no sign of the rain stopping."
