International Obstetric Fistula Elimination Day 2025 celebrated in Bhurungamari

 


Bhurungamari, Kurigram Correspondent 28May 2025: On the occasion of International Obstetric Fistula Elimination Day-2025, the day was celebrated with due dignity in Bhurungamari Upazila of Kurigram district through a colorful rally and discussion meeting. On Wednesday (May 27), various day-long programs were held at the Upazila Health Complex with the support of UNFPA-Bangladesh and Lamb Hospital.

On the occasion of the day, a colorful rally started from the Upazila Health Complex premises at 12:30 am and circled the hospital premises. Later, a discussion meeting was held in the hospital meeting room.

The discussion meeting was presided over by Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Abu Sajjad Mohammad Sayem. He said, "We are determined to make our Bhurungamari Upazila free of fistula. Those concerned should be more sincere in identifying fistula patients at the field level and ensuring prompt treatment." He stressed on referring patients to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, Lamb Hospital (Parbatipur) and other government hospitals.

Upazila Education Officer Mobaswer Ali, Upazila Health Inspector Sobahan, Senior Staff Nurse Rina Akhter, Upazila Health Coordinator of BRAC's TB Program Shyamal Kumar Roy also spoke at the meeting. Health workers at various levels including hospital nurses, midwives, CHCPs, health assistants were present at the event.

The speakers at the meeting highlighted the need to increase public awareness about obstetric fistula disease and said that if timely treatment is ensured, patients will be freed from their inhuman lives.

It is to be noted that Lamb Hospital is playing an important role in the government's efforts by working at the field level, identifying fistula patients and referring them to government hospitals.
