He works in Rangpur divisional city. He chose the time to rush to his village home to change his life.
Jewel Ahmed, who hails from a small village in Nilphamari district, has built a self-reliant life with his hard work, talent and enthusiasm. A professional journalist, Jewel is today a successful entrepreneur. He has not only changed his own life by fattening cows, farming fish, cultivating ginger and raising local chickens in his own home, but has also become a source of inspiration for many around him.
Jewel Ahmed started his professional career as a journalist for the local weekly Nilsagar, founded by his father, a lecturer, Tofazzal Hossain. He stood for justice and spoke out against injustice. He spent more than three decades in the media. However, financial security was always a challenge in his journalism career. That is why he once thought of doing something different in his life. Along with journalism, he thought of starting a small farm. He said, "While working in newspapers, I have done many reports on agriculture and entrepreneurs. That is when I thought of doing something. That is my inspiration.
Jewel's new journey started from the empty space of his homestead in the Dewani Para of Chader Hat, Ramnagar Union, his birthplace, Nilphamari. He first started a local cattle fattening project in the empty space of his backyard. It was named 'Nibir Agro and Dairy Farm'. He also registered it with the government. Starting with two cows, now the number of cows in his farm is more than 15. He specially raises cows in the local method, so that good profits can be obtained at low cost. There was no lack of sincerity from the officials and doctors of the Nilphamari District and Upazila Animal Resources Department in this work. He built a large pond behind the cow farm, where he cultivates different species of fish. There are various types of fish in his pond, including tilapia, rui, katla, silver carp. There is a huge demand for this fish in the local market. Weekly He has supplied fish to the local market several times.
Jewel has also shown wonders by cultivating ginger in polybags or sacks. He is a shining example of how to make a profit by cultivating ginger in a small area. Ginger plants are growing in sacks spread around his house, which are yielding good yields. The 'Advanced Spices, Technology Extension, Project Extension Department, Horticulture Center, Burirhat, Rangpur' has been very supportive in ginger cultivation.
Another example of Jewel's initiative is raising local chickens. He raises and markets local chickens in the courtyard of his house. Chicken meat and eggs are in high demand locally. Local traders book them in advance. Everyone in the family is enjoying the taste of pure local chicken meat and eggs.
He said, "Raising local chickens takes a little time and care, but its price is very high in the market. That's why I do it regularly. Local women are also now learning from me and setting up small farms in their homes."
Jewel Ahmed is also skilled in using modern technology and digital media. He started using new technology on his farm with the advice of YouTube, agriculture-based Facebook groups, and the government agricultural office. For example, he has brought modernity to everything, including calculating cow feed, measuring fish pH, and using incubators to hatch chickens.
Jewel Ahmed said that journalism is a challenging profession. After that, he rushed to his village home in Nilphamari whenever he got time after handling journalism in the Rangpur divisional city. After fulfilling his professional duties, he traveled 66 kilometers to his farm. Due to his permanent residence in Nilphamari and Rangpur, the village home was deserted. Jewel did not have much hope at home except for the Palaparvan. Although the old mother Monowara Begum (76) did not want to be in the city. Her mind would often fall on her husband's house but her body would remain in the brick city. Since the farm was built, her mother's mind has settled in the house. The green nature and the chatter of animals now have a different atmosphere at home.
His biggest supporter on the path to becoming an entrepreneur was his family. His wife and children inspired him from the beginning. In addition, he received support from the local union council, agriculture office, and livestock department. He is also inspiring local unemployed youth to become entrepreneurs with this plan of his.
Behind every success lies a story of struggle. Jewel Ahmed's case is no exception. After starting the farm, he faced losses at first. He struggled a lot due to food costs, disease prevention, and market fluctuations. However, he said, “I knew where my goal was? So no matter how hard it was, I didn’t give up. Today, I am reaping the fruits of that hard work. Jewel Ahmed’s farm is not only a source of income for a family, but also an important milestone for the local economy. 5-7 local youths work on his farm. He has trained many of them and made them self-reliant. As a result, in addition to creating employment locally, a rich entrepreneurial environment has been created around him.
Jewel Ahmed does not want to stop. His goal is to expand his farm further. He has started the construction of a separate shed for the cattle farm. He has plans to introduce the biofloc method in fish farming. He wants to take ginger farming to a commercial scale. He is also looking into raising domestic ducks and goats. He said, “My dream is that 10 more youths like me can become entrepreneurs. I want to share my experience with them.” Jewel Ahmed’s journey has become a source of inspiration for many. Many people in Nilphamari and surrounding areas are following him and starting their own ventures.
Jewel Ahmed has shown us that with willpower, hard work, and planning, one can create one’s own position. His story of turning from a journalist to an entrepreneur is not only a life change, but also a reflection of the economic and social development of an area.
