On the occasion of the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha 2025, an important preparatory meeting was held under the joint initiative of the Rangpur Metropolitan Passenger and Goods Transport Committee and the Metropolitan Road Safety Committee to ensure safe and smooth travel of passengers on the road.
The meeting was attended by the Honorable Police Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, Mr. Md. Majid Ali, BPM. Also present were Mr. Safizul Islam, Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Ops), RPMP; Mr. Md. Habibur Rahman, Deputy Police Commissioner (CTSB); Mr. Md. Abdur Rashid, Deputy Police Commissioner (Traffic); Mr. S. M. Mahbubur Rahman, Assistant Director, BRTA; Mr. Md. Anwarul Haque, Deputy Director, Fire Service Rangpur; Mr. Md. Zulfiqar Ali, Manager, BRTC Bus Depot, Rangpur; Mr. Md. Ashikur Rahman Ashiq, General Secretary, Bus Owners Association; Journalists, political figures, representatives of civil society and other concerned stakeholders.
It was mentioned in the meeting that 5 people were killed and 45 injured in road accidents in the Rangpur region last Eid. In this context, emphasis was laid on taking specific plans and effective measures to keep this year's Eid journey safe and accident-free. Main topics discussed:
Traffic management and control:
Mobile shops will be banned from setting up at modern intersections. No buses will be allowed to park except at designated places. Arrangements will be made for single-lane movement of vehicles and random parking will be stopped.
Extortion Prevention:
The Police Commissioner assured strict police action to stop extortion in Mahiganj Satmatha. The BRTC authorities requested to set up their counters across a 200-meter area at the Modern intersection.
Bus fares and passenger services: The fixed fare list was ordered to be hung in front of each bus counter. Legal action will be taken against allegations of excessive fare collection. The bus owners informed that the fare increases slightly due to empty vehicles heading towards Dhaka during Eid.
Animal trucks and sacrificial markets:
Instructions to put up banners mentioning the name of the market on animal trucks. Sacrificial markets cannot be set up on the road and excessive collection of revenue must be stopped. Police will provide security to traders in transporting money. Counterfeit money detection machines will be provided to police stations with the help of Bangladesh Bank.
Awareness and law and order:
Instructions to hire volunteer teams to identify pickpockets and malam parties are directed to the lessees. A pre-meeting and plan will be formulated to stop passenger harassment at the bus stand.
Other important decisions:
It was called for setting the maximum speed of buses at 80 km/h. It was requested to keep the fuel pumps open before and after Eid.
Finally, the Police Commissioner called on all stakeholders to sincerely fulfill their responsibilities and make the Eid journey safe, comfortable and smooth through coordinated efforts. He assured the Rangpur Metropolitan Police of its preparedness to resolve traffic congestion, prevent passenger harassment, control bus fares and maintain law and order.
At the end of the meeting, the Police Commissioner declared the meeting over by wishing everyone an early Eid Mubarak.
