Experts advise against using toxic pesticides on land


 

Lalmonirhat, June 25, 2025 : Speakers at the day-long 'Partner Congress 2025' held for sustainable development in the agriculture and nutrition sectors said that the use of toxic pesticides in the land must be stopped, which is extremely harmful to the environment and public health.

The congress, which was held at the Upazila Parishad Hallroom from 10 am to 4 pm on Tuesday, was organized by the Department of Agricultural Extension of Lalmonirhat. The congress, organized under the 'Program on Agricultural and Rural Transformation for Nutrition, Entrepreneurship and Resilience in Bangladesh (Partner)' project, was attended as the chief guest by Dr. Md. Saikhul Arifin, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension, Lalmonirhat.

The special guests were Ashok Kumar Roy, Senior Monitoring Officer of the Partner Project's Rangpur region, Mononit Das, Executive Officer of Sadar Upazila, and A.K.M. Faridul Haque, Additional Agriculture Officer. Khandaker Sohael Ahmed, Agriculture Officer of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila, presided over the meeting.

Speakers at the event said that under the partner project, emphasis is being placed on increasing production through training and technology transfer to farmers, as well as nutrition, market management, and entrepreneurship development.

In his speech as the chief guest, Dr. Md. Saikhul Arifin said, 'The contribution of farmers in ensuring the country's food security is undeniable. However, the use of toxic pesticides on land must be stopped, which is very harmful to the environment and public health.' 

He said that farmers are being trained through the 'Partner Field School (PFS)' model under the partner project implemented in 495 upazilas of 64 districts of the country.

Participants expressed the view that this project, funded by the World Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, is becoming an example of a sustainable transformation in the country's agriculture and nutrition sectors.
