BNP wants votes based on traditional democracy, not proportional representation: Rizvi

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi strongly criticized the proportional voting system, saying, "What is the need for proportional voting? In this system, no leaders will be created at the local level, nor will leadership be developed. We are in favor of traditional democracy, where legal voters will vote and elect public representatives of their area."

He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the voluntary blood donation and blood grouping program at the party office at Grand Hotel Morse in Rangpur city on Thursday (July 3) at 11:30 am.

Rizvi further said, "A person has become a leader by standing by the people for a long time, yet in proportional voting, not him, but the party will have to vote. Then, the MP will be selected from the party and declared - this will push towards more dictatorship. Why is such a voting system being talked about in a country of 180 million people, where there are about 120 million voters? The democracy for which people gave their lives, shed their blood, and spent years in prison, is questionable today."

He said, "For the past 16 years, no youth of the country has been able to sleep peacefully. When will someone be arrested, and whose bloody body will be found on the banks of the Teesta, Ganga or Shitalakshya rivers - this was the daily picture. We had to go through this terrible time. No one was spared from Sheikh Hasina's repression. Unity of democratic forces is needed so that those bloodthirsty people cannot return again."

The BNP Senior Joint Secretary General also said, 'Democracy means that there will be an opportunity to freely express opinions and criticize each other. But for the greater interest of the country, we can all be united. Despite the unimaginable repression against BNP leaders and activists in the last 16 years, division could not be created within the party. BNP has maintained unity despite disappearances, murders and torture. BNP has always been uncompromising in the movement for democracy.'

Addressing the leaders and activists, he said, "The leaders and activists of any BNP affiliate organization should not be involved in extortion and occupation. We must ensure that the common people do not suffer due to the behavior of BNP leaders and activists. Everyone must be vigilant that people get justice from BNP. If anyone is involved in these misdeeds, the party will immediately take action against him - there is no concession in this regard."

Also present at the event were Swechchhasebak Dal Central Vice President Dr. Zahid Hossain, Chhatra Dal Central Vice President Dr. Awal, Rangpur Metropolitan BNP Member Secretary Advocate Mahfuz Un Nabi Don, DAB leaders, and leaders and activists of BNP's affiliate and associate organizations.

Doctors Association Rangpur (DAB) organized this voluntary blood donation and blood grouping program as part of BNP's central program on the occasion of the July-August mass uprising and the 'victory anniversary'.
