There has been a widespread outbreak of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle in Tentulia upazila of Panchagarh district in the country's north. Many cows have died due to lumpy skin disease in this upazila over the past month. Farmers and ranchers are in dire straits as the upazila livestock department does not have enough medicines. They have demanded immediate supply of government medicines and vaccines.
It is known that lumpy skin disease of cattle appeared in Tentulia upazila in June this year. This mosquito-borne disease spread rapidly throughout the upazila. According to various sources, several thousand cows have already been infected with this disease. However, no effective vaccine for this disease has been produced yet, and there is also a shortage of medicine.
The affected farmers said that the cow first developed lumps, then developed a high fever. At one point, the lumps burst, oozing blood and pus, and finally the cow died. Despite receiving prescriptions from the livestock office, the necessary medicines are not available, forcing them to buy medicines from outside. The farmers have demanded that the government immediately provide adequate medicines and vaccines.
Ariful Islam, a farmer from Kalaramjot village in Tentulia Sadar Union, said that one of his two cows died of LSD, while the other cow is undergoing treatment. He is in trouble after losing the expensive cow. He also said that he spent 5-6 thousand taka on the treatment.
Hasna Begum, a housewife from the same area, said, "A cow is sick, but the doctor can't come regularly. I'm giving it medicine, but it's not doing much. There's no help available in the village. A cow next door has died, and the one in the house next door is also dying. It starts to rot, then it rots in that place, and then it dies within a few days."
Abdus Sattar, a farmer from Mominpara village, said, "One of my small cows has been suffering from this disease for 15 days. Despite treatment, there has been no improvement. I am continuing the treatment with great difficulty."
Farmer Mozaffar Hossain said, "Currently, one of my cows is suffering from lumpy disease. I went to the livestock office for treatment, but I had to buy medicine from outside." Veterinary Surgeon of the Upazila Livestock Department Dr. Md. Nazmul Hossain said, 'Two diseases usually spread more during the rainy season - one is scabies and the other is lumpy skin disease. Lumpy skin disease is usually spread by mosquitoes and other insects. To keep livestock free from this disease, we are making farmers aware, conducting yard meetings, distributing leaflets, vaccination and veterinary medical campaigns. We hope that the incidence of the disease will decrease in a short time. Farmers should contact the Upazila Livestock Department immediately if their livestock shows symptoms of the disease. We are always ready to provide service.'
