Dinajpur, August 8, 2025: Rambutan, a foreign fruit, is hanging in bunches on agricultural land. It looks a lot like litchi or lychee. The skin of this nutritious fruit is hairy and it is also a bit large in size. Abdur Rahman, a young man from a remote area of Nawabganj upazila of Dinajpur, has succeeded in cultivating this foreign fruit.

Recently, I spoke to Abdur Rahman (38), the son of farmer Abdur Rahim of Kapaldara village in the upazila, about this exotic fruit. I was asked about the success of cultivating rambutan fruit.

He said, "I was introduced to rambutan while I was in Malaysia 6 years ago. I brought rambutan seeds with me when I returned home. But I failed to grow seedlings from those seeds."

Later, after watching YouTube, I collected rambutan fruit seedlings from a village in Faridpur Sadar Upazila in July 2020. I planted 10 seedlings in the land adjacent to my house. Last year, one tree had some limited fruit. However, this year, all the trees have produced a large yield. Each tree has produced about 60 to 70 kg of rambutan. The fruits have started to ripen completely.

He said that for the past few days, visitors have been coming to the garden to see the exotic fruit rambutan and buying it at a price of 1,000 taka per kg. Every day, people from the district as well as from neighboring districts like Rangpur, Gaibandha, Joypurhat and Bogra are coming to see the fruit garden. Many of them are expressing interest in starting this fruit garden.

Abdur Rahman said, "Visitors are asking various questions about rambutan cultivation. We are assisting them by providing information on everything from collecting seedlings to cultivating this fruit."

When visiting Abdur Rahman's garden, it was seen that the size of this foreign fruit is similar to a medium-sized litchi. The red fruits are hanging in bunches on the tree. As the yield is good, nutritious and delicious, its demand has started increasing. Since the fruits are sold at a good price, others are also expressing interest in cultivating it.

Dinajpur Horticulture Department Assistant Director Md. Zahidur Rahman said, Rambutan fruit is mostly cultivated in China, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Currently, cultivation of this fruit has started in different parts of the country. Young Abdur Rahman has found success in cultivating this fruit because it is in demand and profitable.

He said, "Since the soil in this region has good yields, there is immense potential for commercial rambutan cultivation. We have been providing all-round support to the young man Abdur Rahman from the Horticulture Department in rambutan cultivation."

Agriculturist Zahidur Rahman said that rambutan fruit can be cultivated with organic fertilizers and little irrigation. The Horticulture Department has already started the process of making grafted seedlings to spread this fruit among the farmers. This year, the process of making several seedlings has started.

Mushfiqur Rahman of Kapaldara village said, "Every day, people of all ages flock to Abdur Rahman's garden to see this exotic fruit. Many are buying this fruit as a hobby. Many are becoming interested in cultivating this fruit because of its good yield and delicious taste."

Nawabganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Tapas Kumar Roy said, "This nutritious fruit has been newly cultivated in the upazila. Young man Abdur Rahman has been successful in cultivating this fruit. Many others have planted trees of this fruit like him. The Agriculture Department is providing farmers with advice and overall support in cultivating rambutan fruit."
