Panchagarh, August 27, 2025 (BSS): Tanim Auto Rice Mill has been accused of polluting groundwater by discharging mill waste in the Jalasi area of the district town. The water from the tube well in the area has already become unfit for use. The Department of Environment has issued a show-cause notice to the mill authorities in this incident.
On August 25, the Panchagarh District Office of the Department of Environment sent a show cause notice to the owner of the rice mill, Md. Jinnah.
Assistant Director of the District Office Md. Yusuf Ali confirmed the notice was sent on Wednesday afternoon.
The notice, signed by Md. Yusuf Ali, states that the liquid waste from the rice mill is being directly discharged into the groundwater, polluting groundwater. It has been alleged that the water in the tube wells of the locals has become contaminated, which is increasing health risks. The notice seeks a satisfactory response from the mill owner within 7 days. Otherwise, legal action will be taken, it is stated.
It has been found that almost every house adjacent to the mill is now facing a shortage of clean water. Polluted water is coming out of 80-90 feet deep tube wells. The locals are keeping quiet because the mill authorities are influential. Many are being forced to install new, deeper borewells. However, locals claim that if this waste discharge is not controlled, it will soon reach deeper.
Lawyer Mahmud Al Mamun Himu's house is next to the rice mill. He said, "As liquid waste is discharged directly into the groundwater, the water from the nearby tube wells is smelling bad. The water we used to drink before has now become unfit for consumption. We are forced to bring water from distant areas." He said, "Due to water pollution, we cannot bathe comfortably and there is a risk of skin problems. Now, tube well water cannot be used for cooking either. If this problem is not solved quickly, the health of the people here will be at risk."
Regarding this, Tanim Auto Rice Mill owner Md. Jinnah said, "It is a matter of testing. I have received the letter, I will respond."
Assistant Director of the Panchagarh District Office of the Department of Environment, Md. Yusuf Ali, said that there have been allegations of water pollution due to the waste released from the mill. For this, a show-cause notice has been issued to the mill authorities.
If they do not provide a satisfactory response within the stipulated time, action will be taken against them.
