Arfan Hossain, the younger brother of Felani Khatun, a teenager who was killed in firing by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Phulbari border in Kurigram, has been hired as a soldier in the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Lalmonirhat 15 BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam officially handed over the appointment letter to Arfan Hossain on Thursday (September 18). The appointment letter was given to Arfan Hossain after he participated in and passed the recruitment examination organized by Lalmonirhat Battalion (15 BGB) on February 23.

On January 7, 2011, 14-year-old Felani was shot dead by BSF personnel at the Anantapur border in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram. Her body was hanging from a barbed wire fence for at least five hours. When that picture was published in local and foreign media, it sparked a storm of criticism. Since then, Felani's family has been fighting for justice for a long time.

Felani's brother Arfan Hossain told Ajker Patrika, "My parents' dream was to work for the country. Ever since people protested after Felani's murder, I wanted to join the BGB. Today, that dream has come true. I thank the BGB for giving me the opportunity to serve the people of the country."

Felani's father Nur Islam said, "On the way back from India, my minor daughter Felani was shot dead like a bird by the BSF and hung on a barbed wire fence. I still can't forget that scene. However, the countrymen and the BGB were always by our side. They helped us by opening shops. Today, my son got a job opportunity in the BGB due to his talent and qualifications. This is a big achievement in my life."

Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, commander of BGB's Lalmonirhat 15th Battalion, said, "BGB is always by Felani's family. Felani's younger brother has passed the recruitment exam. He will join the training center tomorrow, Friday. We believe that after the training, he will serve the country as a skilled member."

Mehdi Imam also said that the BGB is always vigilant and diligent at the border to ensure that brutal incidents like the Felani killing do not happen again.
