District Representative , Kurigram
Published: 16 September 2025: Due to heavy rainfall and upstream inundation, the water level of Teesta and Dudhkumar rivers in Kurigram has increased and is flowing slightly below the danger level. The low-lying areas including the char areas of the river basins have been flooded. Various crops including Aman fields have been submerged. As a result, farmers in the region are facing losses.
Locals say that if the water level rises further, there will be serious damage to paddy and other crops submerged in the water. And even if the water level recedes quickly, they will still be affected. The government's cooperation will be needed to compensate for these losses.
According to the local Water Development Board at 9 am on Tuesday (September 16), the water level of the Dudhkumar River has increased and is flowing seven centimeters below the danger level at Pateshwari Point in Nageshwari Upazila of the district. On the other hand, the water level of the Teesta has decreased slightly at Kaunia Point and is flowing 18 centimeters below the danger level. Due to heavy rainfall upstream, there is a risk of water level rising in the next two days, the Water Development Board said.
Kurigram Water Development Board Executive Engineer Rakibul Hasan said that the water level of Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers may increase at a steady rate in the next two days. During this time, the water level of Teesta and Dudhkumar rivers may cross the danger level. As a result, a wider area of the lower reaches of the rivers of Kurigram district may be flooded.
Asaduzzaman, Additional Deputy Director of the Kurigram Agriculture Department, said that due to the increase in the water level of rivers, 120 hectares of planted aman fields, 45 hectares of vegetables and 5 hectares of masala fields in the low-lying areas have been submerged. If the water does not recede as soon as possible, these crops will suffer extensive damage.
