More than 700 houses destroyed by cyclone in Rangpur


 Rangpur, October 5, 2025 : Eleven villages of Alambiditar and Nohali unions in Gangachara upazila of Rangpur have been devastated by a cyclone. More than seven hundred houses have been destroyed in this natural disaster that lasted just two minutes.

A sudden gust of wind and heavy rain began around 8 am on Sunday. Many mud and brick houses collapsed, power lines were cut off, and agricultural land was severely damaged. Several people, including schoolchildren, were injured in the storm.

Nazmul Hossain, a resident of Kutub Hazirhat in Alambiditar Union, said, "I never thought such a storm would suddenly occur. The roof of the house was blown away before my eyes, and the contents inside were soaked. I have now taken shelter with my family in a nearby school." 

Sirajul Islam from the same area said, "My rice fields have been completely destroyed. The crops standing on the land are now under water. Running the family is now a matter of concern. My son suffered a head injury when his house collapsed and is now hospitalized."

Safiyar Rahman of Qutub village said, "Our houses were destroyed and everything was gone. The children were crying, we didn't know where to take shelter. Now we have no way to survive without the help of the administration."

Aftabuzzaman Chayan, administrator and upazila cooperative officer of Alambiditor Union, said that more than 300 houses in their union have been damaged.

Nohali Union Parishad Chairman Ashraf Ali said that about 400 houses in his union were destroyed. He immediately informed the matter to the Upazila Executive Officer and higher authorities.

Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Sajibul Karim said that the houses of hundreds of families have been partially or completely damaged in the cyclone. The process of assessing the extent of the damage and quickly delivering emergency relief assistance to the affected people is underway.

Gangachara Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Mahmud Hasan Mridha said that the upazila administration team has already reached the field to inspect the cyclone-affected areas. A complete list of the damage will be prepared and assistance will be provided to the affected families in phases.
