By Rezaul Karim Jibon :
Own Correspondent: Former Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh and President of the Consumer Association of Bangladesh CAB, AHM Shafiquzzaman, said that CAB is being reorganized to realize consumer rights. He said this while speaking as the chief guest at a day-long training titled Departmental Food Enrichment and Consumer Rights at the Circuit House Auditorium in Rangpur city on Sunday.
AHM Shafiquzzaman said that CAB's work is not just market monitoring. It has to work on civil rights. For example, awareness should be raised in drug pharmacies. So that expired medicines, low-quality medicines, high prices, expired baby food are not sold. In addition, CAB members will play a role in raising awareness about fertilizer syndicates, transport syndicates, and wet seeds. Moreover, edible oil is not sold in open drums in the market. In that case, awareness should be raised at the trader and consumer levels. In this regard, various organizations including the Consumer Affairs Department, BSTI, Agriculture Department, and Drug Administration Department are working. CAB should also come forward alongside them.
He also said that Rangpur, the place where Abu Sayeed sacrificed his life in the 24th mass uprising, has various problems. Rangpur does not have medical treatment here, education is not good in educational institutions here. There are problems with potatoes here. There are various problems in agriculture. There are problems with dealerships in Rangpur. Many people are more interested in making profits in dealerships. The people of Rangpur do not get the right price for agricultural products. There is extortion in transportation on the road here. Therefore, it is not possible to just go to a meeting with the DC by introducing CAB. We have a lot of work to do. CAB has to work to stop these. Abu Sayeed has to change Rangpur. It will not work if we continue as before.
He also said, I was in the government. There were many obligations. Now there are no more obstacles. Now I want to work for people's rights through CAB. He told the Deputy Commissioner that elections are coming up. During this election, traders will increase the prices of products. They will do it for the greed of more profit. That issue also needs to be monitored. Many adulterated medicines are sold in Rangpur. He also said that the CAB and the district administration should look into that issue.
Rangpur District CAB Committee President Abdur Rahman presided over the day-long training, with Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Enamul Ahsan as the special guest. Jahangir Alam, Deputy Director of the Consumer Rights Protection Department, Rangpur Division, Assistant Director Momtaz Begum, Engineer Latifur Rahman Milon, President of the Rangpur District and Divisional Dairy Pharmacies Association, Rangpur District CAB General Secretary Amirul Islam Raju, Metropolitan CAB President Dilip Kumar, General Secretary Joynal Abedin Mithu, District Vice President Jasim Uddin and other CAB leaders also spoke at the time. In this training, held in collaboration with the Food Fortification Project of the non-governmental organization GAIN, a power point presentation on food quality was presented by GAIN Project Manager Md. Abul Bashar Chowdhury.
The presidents, secretaries and members of the 8 district committees of Rangpur division participated in the training titled Divisional Food Fortification and Consumer Rights, initiated by the Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB). Officers from other government departments also participated in this training.
