'Long March to Jamuna' program if 21 points are not followed
Journalists in Rangpur have announced a 'Long March to Jamuna' if their 21-point demands, including financial and workplace security for journalists and the establishment of a free media, are not implemented.
The leaders made this announcement at a human chain rally organized by the Rangpur Union of Journalists (RPUJ) on Saturday (November 1) afternoon.
At the time, journalist leaders said that the 'No Wage Board, No Media' policy should be implemented immediately to ensure financial and workplace security and establish an independent media, set the minimum salary of journalists at Tk 35,000, implement the ninth wage board for print, electronic and online media and form the tenth wage board, formulate a journalist protection policy, set a weekly holiday of 2 days for journalists, try all journalists including the journalist couple Sagar-Runi, abolish all anti-independence laws of the media, establish a primary labor court to ensure fair wages for journalists according to the law, form a common wage board for newspapers, online, television, radio and multimedia, and reduce the high corporate tax rate imposed on newspapers from 27.5 percent.
They also said that if these demands are not met, journalists will hold a 'Long March to Jamuna' program if necessary. Journalists from Rangpur will participate in that program. Now journalists from all over the country are unitedly holding this program to implement the 21-point demands. If the government does not budge, then if necessary, a large rally and Jamuna siege program will be held in Dhaka. RPUJ President Salequzzaman Salek presided over the human chain and moderated by General Secretary Sarkar Mazharul Mannan, Rangpur Sammilit Janguri Samaj Member Secretary Liaqat Ali Badal, Senior Journalist Mahbub Rahman Habu, City Press Club President Swapan Chowdhury, General Secretary Humayon Kabir Manik, RPUJ Senior Vice President Chanchal Mahmud, Organizing Secretary Badshah Osmani, Rangpur Reporters Club Organizing Secretary Fakhrul Shaheen, Rangpur Reporters Unity General Secretary Shimul Islam, Bangladesh Photo Journalist Association General Secretary Asaduzzaman Afzal, Television Camera Journalist Association Joint General Secretary Rakibul Islam, Online Journalist Association Member Khushbu Hasan Roni, Begum Rokeya University Journalist Association Acting President Abu Sayeed, Mahiganj Press Club President Bablu Nag, among others, spoke at the human chain.
Former convener of the Rangpur district anti-discrimination student movement Imran Ahmed, Red July president and NCP leader Sheikh Rezwan expressed solidarity at the rally. In addition to the journalist organizations of Rangpur, leaders of journalist organizations from eight upazilas of the district also participated in the human chain in solidarity.
