Onion prices drop in Dinajpur on news of imports

Dinajpur, November 15, 2025 (BSS): The news of permission to import onions through Hili land port in the district has started to have an impact on the market. In a span of a day, the price of onions in the market has dropped by up to Tk 20 per kg.
Buyers and sellers in the market are expressing the opinion that onion prices in the market could fall further if supplies continue through imports from India.
On Saturday afternoon, a visit to the Dinajpur Hili Land Port market showed that the supply of domestic onions is better than before in every shop in the market. This has led to a decrease in the price of onions. In the past few days, the same onions, which were sold at 100 taka per kg, are now being sold at a reduced price of 80 taka per kg.
Based Ali, a buyer at Hili Bazaar, said that the price of onions has been fluctuating for the past few days. Sometimes it increases, sometimes it decreases. The onions that I bought last week at a price of 60 to 65 taka per kg, suddenly increased in price and were being sold at 100 taka. With the news of the government's permission to import, the price of onions has again decreased by 20 taka per kg.
This buyer said, "We want the price of onions to be within the purchasing power of the customer."
Golam Mustafa, an onion seller at Hili Bazar, said that towards the end of the domestic onion season, prices had increased due to a sudden decrease in supply. The price of onions at Hili Bazar had increased by Tk 10 to 15 per kg.
He said that the onions that were being sold at 60 taka per kg a few days ago were being sold at 100 taka per kg. The price of onions has started to fall again after the government announced permission to import onions on Friday.
President of Hili Land Port Importers-Exporters Association Shakhawat Hossain Shilpi said that some importers have opened LCs to import onions from India after the government allowed them to import onions from India. He mentioned that the imported onions will enter the country through Hili Land Port in the next two to three days.
