Winter vegetable supply in the market has increased, but there is no relief in prices

 Bipul Islam :

Lalmonirhat, November 26, 2025: Like other districts in the northern part of the country, Lalmonirhat is also witnessing bumper vegetable harvest across the fields at the beginning of winter. Various vegetables including gourd, radish, cabbage, potato, brinjal and tomato are going directly from the farmers' fields to the wholesale market.

Despite normal production and supply, vegetable prices have not come down in the retail market. Usually, vegetable prices in the producing areas during this time range between Tk 10 and Tk 40 per kg. However, consumers have expressed disappointment over the price hike for months and have demanded increased government supervision to restore peace in the market.

The important wholesale vegetable markets of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila include Goshala, Saptibari, Nayarhat, Mahendranagar, BDR Hat and Barabari Bazar. Every morning, farmers sell their vegetables here. From here, vegetables are supplied to various markets in the district and other districts.

On Wednesday, in various markets in the district headquarters, the price of small bitter gourd per kilogram was 120 to 130 taka, large bitter gourd 60 to 65 taka, tomato 70 to 80 taka, carrot 60 to 70 taka, beans 50 to 60 taka, kachur mukhi 30 to 40 taka, and okra 50 to 60 taka.

Besides, beetroot is being sold at Tk 50 to 60 per kg, cucumber at Tk 40 to 50, sweet pumpkin at Tk 40 to 50, gourd at Tk 40 to 50 per piece, cauliflower and kale at Tk 40 to 50, radish at Tk 20 to 30, coriander leaves at Tk 60, green chilli at Tk 100, onion at Tk 80 to 90, ginger at Tk 120, garlic at Tk 80 to 100 and lemon at Tk 25 to 30.

However, there may be a slight difference in prices in district, city, and union level markets.

Buyers have expressed dissatisfaction over the difference in retail and wholesale prices at the Goshala market in Lalmonirhat district town. Buyers Alamgir Hossain (50) and Afzal Hossain (52) said that the area is not a big city, it is a district. Farmers here directly produce vegetables, which go to different parts of the country. The prices are higher in other places due to the additional costs of transportation and traders. Since the supply is here, vegetables were usually available for 10 to 40 taka. If such prices are here, then one can imagine the situation in other big cities. The market is now unstable due to the excessive profits of traders. With regular government supervision, it is possible to keep the situation under control.

Sekender Ali (40), a wholesale trader at Barabari Aart, said that winter vegetables have been in the market for a month. Farmers have been getting good prices from the beginning. However, since the cultivation is not done on time, the supply is low, resulting in rising prices. It is expected that the prices of vegetables will come down a lot in the next one or two days.
Alamuddin (42), a vendor at Senamaitree Hawkers Market, said that due to heavy winds and rain at the beginning of the season, farmers could not cultivate on time. Besides, pressure from syndicates is also a reason for the rising price trend.

Akbar Ali (52), a farmer who came to sell vegetables at the market, said that sudden rains, cyclone winds and cold waves damage vegetable plants and reduce yields. On the other hand, the cost of production also increases when the cost of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation and labor increases. This has an impact on market prices.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, in addition to potatoes, early vegetables have been cultivated on about 2,155 hectares of land in the district this season. The cultivation will gradually increase. The Agriculture Department is giving utmost importance to the production of safe and poison-free vegetables.

Deputy Director of the District Agricultural Extension Department, Dr. Md. Saikhul Arifin said, farmers are getting good prices for winter vegetables, which is a positive signal. The yield has been fairly good. As the supply in the market increases, the prices will gradually start decreasing. Hopefully, the market will regain its balance within a few days.
