Published: 26 February 2026 : The spring breeze is blowing in nature. Instead of bringing relief from the spring breeze, the residents of Rangpur city are suffering from mosquito infestation. Mosquito bites have created a miserable situation everywhere day and night.
Local residents say that the mosquito breeding is especially high around the Shyamasundari and KD canals that flow through the heart of the city. The mosquito plague starts in homes from the afternoon. There is no shortage of mosquito infestation in offices and courts. Although the city residents are fed up with mosquitoes, the Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) has not taken any steps to clean the drains or kill mosquitoes. The city residents claim that the water has stagnated due to the lack of renovation and cleaning of the canals for a long time. As a result, the canals have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. As soon as evening falls, mosquitoes swarm inside and outside the houses. In many areas, the mosquito infestation cannot be controlled even with the use of sprays and coils.
Locals said that the Shyama Sundari Canal was once connected to the dead Ghaghat in Mahiganj, starting from the Ghaghat River and passing through the city's Dhap Pasharipara, Keranipara, Munshipara, Engineerpara, Gomstapara, Senpara, Mulatol, Tentultala, Nurpur, and Bairagipara. The canal has not been renovated for a long time, and has lost its navigability and has become a major cause of mosquito breeding.
Many people, including Abdul Momin and Usman Gani, residents of Kedikhal, said that Kedikhal has not been cleaned for a long time. As a result, more mosquitoes are being born in this canal than in Shyamasundari. In addition, since the city's drains, ponds and water bodies are not cleaned properly, mosquitoes are also being bred there. Due to the oppression of mosquitoes everywhere day and night, there is a fear of spreading mosquito-borne diseases. Mosquitoes have made it difficult to study after evening. Many are forced to study by hanging mosquito nets. Humayun Kabir Manik, a resident of the city's Shalban area, said, "I have been living in Rangpur city for a long time. I have never seen so many mosquitoes in this city, which I have been seeing for the past few years. This time, there are more of them. Mosquitoes are singing to us all the time, day and night. It has become difficult to open the windows after the afternoon. If the windows of the house are opened even for five minutes after the evening, all the mosquitoes come and enter." Kamrul Hasan Titu of the city's College Road area said, "We are fed up with the oppression of mosquitoes. Children are unable to study because of mosquitoes, they have to burn coils all the time. The children are also having many problems including breathing problems due to the smoke from the coils. Not cleaning the drains regularly and properly and spraying for mosquitoes is ineffective, which is why the oppression of mosquitoes has increased."
Amanat Ali of the city's Dhap area said, "There is no supervision due to the lack of a mayor and councilor in the city corporation. I don't understand whether any mosquito control activities are going on in the city. I can't remember when the last time mosquitoes were killed in our area. Moreover, due to the uncleanliness of the Shyama Sundari Canal, mosquito manufacturing factories have been set up. If the Shyama Sundari Canal were clean, the mosquito infestation would have been reduced." Pediatrician Dr. Zakir Hossain said, even if the mosquito infestation increases, using coils is very risky for the body. It is better to use mosquito nets than coils. Coil smoke in closed rooms causes difficulty in breathing for children. Moreover, everyone should avoid the chemical fumes of low-quality coils. As a citizen, if there is water accumulated around the house, that water should be cleaned. Even if there is garbage around the house, mosquitoes breed. For this reason, we as citizens must also be aware. Rangpur City Corporation's waste management branch head Mizanur Rahman Mizu said, this time the number of mosquitoes has increased compared to other times. Therefore, a comprehensive program has been undertaken to kill mosquitoes. 10,000 liters of medicine have been purchased. Along with this, 80 new fogger machines have been purchased. In addition, 66 hand spray machines have been purchased. Due to the holy month of Ramadan, a large-scale mosquito killing campaign cannot be started. Even so, a complete mosquito killing campaign has already started in some areas. Mosquito killing will be done in all 33 wards in phases.
