Protests demanding recount of votes in Rangpur-4 and 6 constituencies, ultimatum

BNP candidate's supporters have staged protests and blocked roads in Rangpur-4 and Rangpur-6 constituencies demanding a recount of votes, alleging that a large number of votes were canceled and the results were changed through mobs. They have also warned of strict action if the votes are not recounted.

The winning candidate of Rangpur-4 constituency, Akhtar Hossain, has alleged that NCP leaders and activists were attacked, vandalized and looted during the protest by the workers and supporters of the BNP candidates. However, BNP candidate Emdadul Haque Bhorsa has denied these allegations.

Meanwhile, the winning candidate in Rangpur-6 constituency, Maulana Nurul Islam, has denied allegations of election engineering and urged the people to remain calm. On Friday (February 13), from afternoon to night, activists and supporters of Emdadul Haque Bhorsa protested in Haq Bazar of Haragachh municipality area of ​​Kaunia upazila, demanding a recount of votes and stopped traffic on the road. During this time, they blocked the Haragachh-Rangpur road and burned tires on the road in protest. The protest was seen continuing till midnight. At that time, BNP leaders, activists and supporters gathered there and protested.

BNP workers and supporters held a protest march and rally in Pirgachha Upazila town on the same demand. During this, they urged the Election Commission, including the District Returning Officer, to recount the results as soon as possible. Jatiya Party candidate Mahbubar Rahman and Bangladesh Congress candidate Ujjwal Chandra Roy both demanded a recount of the votes in Rangpur 4 constituency, alleging that on the day of the election, the opposing candidate Akhtar Hossain created a mob and changed the election results. We also want the results of the vote to be recounted. The complainant candidate Emdadul Haque Bhorsa said that he was 100% confident that he would win the election by the people's verdict. However, between 3 pm and 5 pm, his opponent Akhtar Hossain's people created a mob and claimed that the results were changed with the help of the administration.

Borsa alleged that about 8,500 votes were canceled in the election, which is suspicious. He also said that the real results will be revealed to the people if a recount is conducted. The BNP candidate warned of strict agitation and gave an ultimatum if he does not get a fair trial. Denying all the allegations, Akhtar Hossain held a counter-press conference at night and said, "People of the BNP candidate are using mikes to find out NCP workers and beat them up. Several houses have already been vandalized and looted, and motorcycles have been vandalized. He alleged that threats to vandalize and set houses on fire have also been made." According to unofficial results in Rangpur-4 constituency, NCP candidate Akhtar Hossain was elected with 149,966 votes under the Shapla symbol. His nearest rival Emdadul Haque Borsa received 140,564 votes.

Meanwhile, activists and supporters of BNP candidate Saiful Islam also held a protest march in Rangpur-6 (Pirganj) constituency. They surrounded the Upazila Parishad premises with a protest march at night and raised various slogans. At that time, they demanded that the Upazila Nirbahi Officer take immediate action to recount the results.

In this seat, Jamaat-e-Islami's Maulana Md. Nurul Amin was elected with 120,128 votes under the scale symbol. His nearest rival, BNP's Saiful Islam, received 117,703 votes.
