Discussion meeting on genocide and liberation war held in Rangpur on March 25
Rangpur, March 30, 2026 (BSS): A memorial and discussion meeting on the genocide and the Great Liberation War was held on March 25 at the initiative of the Rangpur Regional Information Office.
Rangpur Metropolitan Freedom Fighters Sangsad Command Unit Member-Secretary, freedom fighter Md. Abdus Sattar was present as the chief guest at the program organized at the Rangpur Adarsh High School auditorium in the city on Monday afternoon.
The program was presided over by Md. Shahjahan Ali, Senior Information Officer of Rangpur Regional Information Office.
In his speech as the chief guest, freedom fighter Abdus Sattar said, "The history of the Liberation War is a glorious event for the Bengali nation. Our address and identity lie within the Liberation War. Without the Liberation War, Bangladesh would not have found its place on the world map as an independent and sovereign state."
He also said that even after winning an absolute victory in the 1970 general elections, the Pakistani ruling class did not hand over power to the Bengalis. Rather, it tried to suppress the Bengali nation through conspiracies.
In continuation of this, on the midnight of March 25, the Pakistani occupying forces carried out barbaric massacres against unarmed Bengalis in various parts of the country.
Then, through a long, bloody nine-month war, our great independence was achieved at the cost of the sacrifice of three million martyrs.
Addressing the students, Md. Abdus Sattar said that the new generation must know the correct history of the Liberation War so that the spirit of independence is not undermined.
He called for building a prosperous country by embracing the spirit of the Liberation War and being imbued with patriotism and a sense of responsibility.
In his speech as a special guest at the meeting, District Education Officer Md. Enayet Hossain said that the Bengali nation continued to struggle for the establishment of democratic rights against the injustice of the then Pakistani rulers. The country gained independence through the Liberation War in 1971.
This independence was not achieved in a day. Behind it lies a long history of exploitation and deprivation. He also said that one of the goals of the Liberation War was to build a happy, prosperous and discrimination-free Bangladesh.
The current generation must be self-sufficient in all areas, including education, employment, and research, and must speak out against injustice and irregularities.
In the president's speech, Senior Information Officer Md. Shahjahan Ali said that for 23 long years after the partition of the country in 1947, the people of the then East Pakistan were subjected to discrimination in the social, political, economic, cultural and educational fields.
Against this injustice and deprivation, the Bengali nation gradually united and joined the freedom movement, and the spirit of Bengali nationalism was firmly established.
He said about the barbaric massacre of unarmed Bengalis at midnight on March 25, 1971, that the main purpose of this genocide was to suppress the movement of the Bengali nation to achieve its just rights.
But this brutal murder strengthened the demand for independence and the great war of liberation began.
He urged the new generation to play a role in the country's development and achieving the desired progress by understanding the correct history of the Liberation War.
Also speaking at the event were special guests including Rangpur Adarsh High School Principal Mohammad Rahmat Alam, agriculturist Md. Azhar Ali Mandal, and others.
Government officials, teachers, and over a hundred students were present at the meeting.
