Prime Minister inaugurates canal digging program in Dinajpur



Dinajpur, March 16, 2026 (BSS): Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today inaugurated a canal digging program in Sahapara of Kaharol upazila of Dinajpur. He formally launched the program by cutting the soil with a spade.

After the inauguration, he planted a tree on the banks of the canal.

The implementation of the nationwide 'Dredging and Re-Dredging of Rivers, Canals, and Reservoirs' program began today with the inauguration of the Sahapara Canal Re-Dredging by the Prime Minister. As per the government's election promise, a plan has been taken to dredge and re-dredge 20,000 kilometers of rivers, canals, and reservoirs across the country in the next five years.

The program is being launched in 53 districts of the country in the first phase. Government officials concerned said that the implementation of this initiative will have a positive impact on reducing waterlogging, developing the irrigation system, increasing agricultural production and conserving water bodies.

The Prime Minister has started this program following in the footsteps of her father, martyred President Ziaur Rahman. During his rule, Ziaur Rahman launched a nationwide canal digging program, which played a significant role in the development of the rural economy, agricultural production and irrigation system. The current initiative is seen as a continuation of that program.

Among others, BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Social Welfare Minister Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, Water Resources Minister Md. Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, and State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad were present at the event.

Earlier this morning, the Prime Minister arrived at Saidpur Airport from Dhaka by air. From there, she went by road to the venue in Kaharol Upazila of Dinajpur to inaugurate the program.
