The largest wholesale tomato market in northern Dinajpur
Dinajpur, March 2, 2026: More than one and a half to two hundred metric tons of tomatoes are supplied to different districts of the country every day at wholesale prices from the largest market in Gabura, located in the northern part of the district headquarters.
Gabura in Sadar Upazila, located on the banks of the Garbheshwari River, 4.5 kilometers from Dinajpur district town, has become known nationwide as the largest tomato wholesale market in the northern region.
The fresh and delicious tomatoes produced by farmers are sold on the streets of Gabura, the wholesale tomato market, and even in home yards and temporary stalls.
On-site visit to Gabura Bazar in Dinajpur Sadar Upazila on Sunday afternoon and talking to farmers revealed that their tomatoes are picked from the fields every morning and brought to this market. Wholesalers from different districts of the country come to this market every day to buy tomatoes of their choice.
Farmers cultivate tomatoes on their land and supply them to wholesalers as per their demand. It is said that tomatoes from Gabura Bazar in Dinajpur are widely known in various cities of the country including the capital Dhaka.
Tomatoes from here are in high demand in the famous Chinese restaurants and eateries in the capital Dhaka. The delicious tomatoes produced by farmers in Dinajpur have become very popular with customers in those hotels, especially as salads, with all kinds of dishes.
Farmers Riazul Haque and Atiyar Rahman of Sheikhpura village near Gabura Bazar in Sadar Upazila told BSS that the tomatoes produced in their land are shown to trainees from different districts in the field exhibition of the Agriculture Department. The demand for tomatoes produced in the villages of this area is increasing every year.
Tomato farmers said that when there was no communication system in this area, tomatoes produced here used to spoil in the fields due to lack of market demand during the months of Falgun and Chaitra. With the improvement in communication system, the demand for tomatoes produced here has increased greatly throughout the year from the beginning to the end of the season.
Talking to the shopkeepers of that market, Mirajul Islam and Amjad Ali, it was learned that with the changing times, tomatoes are now being sent daily to different districts of the country including Dhaka by truck in a modern manner, packed in plastic crates. This prevents any damage to the supplied tomatoes and keeps the quality good. As a result, the wholesalers who take the tomatoes here can market them easily. The profits in the wholesalers' business are good. In this way, the tomato market here has gained wide fame across the country.
Dinajpur Horticulture Department Government Director, Agriculturist Sirajul Hasan told BSS that Gabura Bazar in Dinajpur Sadar Upazila is like a tomato kingdom. Every day, when you visit this market, you can see that this wholesale market is covered with red tomatoes all around. Wholesalers from different parts of the country including Dhaka, Chittagong, Narayanganj, Faridpur, Gazipur, Comilla, Chandpur, Cox's Bazar and all over the country come here to buy tomatoes. Although tomatoes are usually a winter Rabi season crop, tomatoes are being cultivated in advance in Dinajpur in the Kharip-1 season. In this case, farmers are cultivating tomatoes on these lands instead of planting Boro rice after harvesting Aman rice.
He said that in this region, the cultivation and supply of tomatoes of Suruvi, Rani and Pavlin seat varieties is high as per the demand of the customers. Wholesalers are buying tomatoes and putting them in the warehouses. In each warehouse, 20 to 30 workers are sorting tomatoes and filling them in baskets with carrots. Some are loading the goods on trucks, some are receiving the goods from the farmers and paying the money.
Sardar Farid Hossain, a worker at Gabura Bazar, said that a total of 500-700 workers are employed in this tomato wholesale market every day. They do all the work properly, from picking tomatoes from the field, sorting them in the warehouse, packing them in plastic cages and loading them on trucks. In return, each worker gets a daily wage of 500 to 800 taka.
Gabura Tomato Wholesale Market Traders Association President Md. Abdul Jalil said that every day, about one and a half to two hundred metric tons of tomatoes are taken from here in 25 to 30 trucks to different districts of the country by wholesalers. All the tomatoes imported to this market are sold. He said that there is no shortage.
Deputy Director of Dinajpur Agricultural Extension Department Md. Afzal Hossain said that the Agriculture Department has been giving special importance to tomato cultivation in this area of Sadar Upazila and has been supporting farmers in producing quality and high yield of tomatoes in their land. As a result, the yield of tomatoes produced in the land here is getting much better. There is a huge demand for tomatoes from the fields here across the country. Tomato production has increased the status of Dinajpur region in the field of agriculture. This area, known as a treasure trove of food, is now known for its tomato production and good reputation.
