Published: 27 April 2026 : The continuous Kalbaishakhi storm of the past few days has damaged various crops, including emerging Boro rice. Farmers claim that crops on nearly a thousand hectares of land have been damaged.
On Monday (April 27), various types of crop damage were seen in different areas of Gaibandha district. The affected farmers were crying out in pain.
It is known that Gaibandha district is known as a storehouse of agricultural crops. Most of the people of this district are dependent on agricultural crops. They dream of meeting all the needs of their families by growing various crops including rice. With such a dream, they are cultivating various types of crops this year as well. In the meantime, the Kalbaisakhi storm has destroyed the dreams of several farmers in an instant.
Local farmers claim that the adverse weather conditions in the past few days have damaged crops on thousands of hectares of land in various fields. Of these, the most damage has been caused in the Kochashharam, Mahimaganj, Sapmara, and Kamardah areas of Gobindaganj Upazila.
According to the Gaibandha Agriculture Department, 360 hectares of crops have been damaged so far due to the Kalbaishakhi storm that swept through seven upazilas of Gaibandha district. Of these, 212 hectares of Boro paddy, 54 hectares of maize, 81 hectares of vegetables, 5 hectares of banana and 8 hectares of Aush seedbeds.
Al Amin Mia, a farmer from Kamarjani, said, "Our people in the char areas are dependent on corn crops. Like every year, improved varieties of corn are cultivated in this season with the hope of more profit. But that dream is being destroyed in an instant by the Kalbaisakhi storm. Now I am wondering how to turn around." Another farmer from Gobindaganj said that he cultivated Boro rice on one and a half acres of land this year on loan. Already, about one bigha of rice has been destroyed in the storm. This loss is not worth compensating for.
Atiqul Islam, Deputy Director of the Gaibandha Department of Agricultural Extension, said, "Some crops were damaged in the recent storm. Work is being done in the field to assess the damage."
