33 percent of people in Rangpur division suffer from high blood pressure

Published: 15 May 2026 : The number of patients suffering from high blood pressure is increasing day by day in the country due to unhealthy lifestyle, uncontrolled eating habits, mental stress, lack of physical exercise and irregular health check-ups. According to a statistic, 33 percent of people in Rangpur division suffer from high blood pressure.

The information was given by the founding president of the organization, Professor Dr. Md. Zakir Hossain, in a discussion meeting at the Hypertension and Research Center, Rangpur, on Friday (May 15) afternoon, marking 'World High Blood Pressure Day'.

He said, Hypertension and Research Center is not limited to providing treatment only; rather, it is working to build a healthy society through awareness raising, disease prevention and research-based activities. The organization has already completed 322 free medical camps to provide services at people's doorsteps. Free blood pressure and diabetes tests, medical consultations and health awareness discussions have been conducted in these camps.

Speakers at the meeting said that high blood pressure often damages important organs of the body without any visible symptoms. That is why it is called the 'silent killer'. Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases the risk of various complex diseases including stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, brain hemorrhage and vision loss. Therefore, emphasis should be placed on regular health check-ups, balanced diet and taking medicines as per the doctor's advice.

The meeting, organized under the theme 'Together Let's Control High Blood Pressure', was chaired by Rangpur Medical College Vice-Principal Dr. Muhammad Zahurul Haque. The special guest was Professor Dr. Mokhlesur Rahman Sarkar, Head of the Department of Medicine of the college.
