Bridge connection road collapses, crossing at risk

Published: 12 May 2026 : Local residents are in extreme distress after one side of a bridge connecting the road built over the Nalshisha River collapsed in the Meripara area of ​​Tukuria Union in Pirganj Upazila of Rangpur. Currently, pedestrians and vehicle passengers are risking their lives by building bamboo platforms to cross the road. Locals are fearing a major accident at any time.

According to local sources, the bridge was built over the Nalshisha River a few years ago with the aim of improving rural communication. It is the only means of transportation for people of Meripara, Nalshisha and several surrounding villages. Hundreds of people, including school and college students, farmers, and businessmen, use this road every day. Recently, when the connecting road on one side of the bridge collapsed, traffic and transportation were disrupted. Later, the locals made temporary crossing arrangements by building bamboo platforms on their own initiative.

Locals complain that they have been facing this problem for a long time. The concerned authorities have not taken effective measures to address this problem. The public suffering due to risky movement is increasing day by day.

Local resident Mamun Mia said that young students are crossing the road on bamboo poles, risking their lives. If the connecting road is not repaired quickly, a major accident could occur.

Another resident, Monir Hossain, said, "Now, we are still able to move around somehow. The pavement sways when a motorcycle or van passes by. However, the situation will be worse when the monsoon season arrives. Repairs are needed urgently."

Pedestrians Aminul Islam, Riaz, Sagar, Abdul Momin and many others said that they have to use this road every day to go to work. Currently, it has become the most dangerous place for the elderly and school students, due to which they are having to suffer. In this regard, LGED Upazila Engineer Asaduzzaman Bappi said, "After learning about the collapse of one side of the bridge's connecting road, the site was inspected. The higher authorities have already been informed for the necessary allocation. As soon as the allocation comes, immediate measures will be taken for renovation."
