'Prime Minister has promised that Teesta Master Plan will be implemented'
Published: 18 May 2026 : State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad MP said that the allocation for the Padma Barrage has been passed by the ECNEC. Inshallah, the Teesta Master Plan will also be implemented in the future. The Honorable Prime Minister has made an election promise, so be patient and wait. The Teesta Master Plan will also be implemented.
He made these remarks in response to questions from journalists after the regional-level inauguration ceremony of Notun Kudi Sports-2026 at Shaheed Abu Sayeed Stadium in Rangpur on Monday (May 18) afternoon.
The State Minister for Water Resources said, our Water Resources Ministry has three challenges. One of these challenges is the Farakka Agreement, the other is the implementation of the Padma Barrage Project and the Teesta Master Plan. It has been only three months since our government was formed. So we have to give it time. Moreover, there are some technical and testing issues for the implementation of the master plan. There is a verification process, which is ongoing. We are doing them.
He said, "Our Farakka Agreement will expire on December 11 of this year. We want to re-implement that agreement. Of all the Farakka agreements made so far, the 1977 agreement made during the time of martyred President Ziaur Rahman was the best and most timely. In that light, we are talking about implementing the agreement again."
He further said, "New Bud Sports is a great initiative to find potential and talented players. The Honorable Prime Minister wants the players emerging from the grassroots through this New Bud Sports to be able to represent Bangladesh at the national and international levels in the future."
The State Minister said, "Every parent wants their child to be established. Many parents want their sons and daughters to complete their studies and become doctors or engineers. But I want to say that if you see that your child is showing interest in sports along with studies, has a passion for sports, speed and morale, then definitely give him a chance in sports. I think that in addition to becoming a doctor-engineer, they will be able to contribute to the country and the region at the national and international levels by becoming a player and earn a lot of fame." The event was presided over by Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Shahidul Islam NDC, and special guests included Rangpur City Corporation Administrator Advocate Mahfuz Un Nabi Chowdhury Don, Rangpur Range DIG Aminul Islam, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ruhul Amin, and District Council Administrator Saiful Islam.
The winning teams from 8 districts of Rangpur division are participating in this regional level competition of Notun Kudi Sports-2026. The competition events are: Football, Cricket, Badminton, Chess, Kabaddi, Martial Arts, Athletics and Swimming.
