Which engine oil is good for motorcycles?

1 July 2025 : Engine oil is the most important component to keep a motorcycle engine running smoothly and for a long time. However, there are two types of engine oil available in the market—mineral and synthetic. The question is, which one is better for motorcycles?

Below are the differences and benefits of these two types of engine oil:

1. What is mineral engine oil?

Mineral oil is refined from natural crude oil. It is available at a low price and is quite suitable for old or general use bikes.

Advantages:

Affordable price

Effective for use on ordinary bikes

Good option for new drivers

Disadvantages:

It gets too hot.

Short-lived (needs to be changed very quickly)

Less effective in high performance engines

2. What is synthetic engine oil?

Synthetic oil is lab-based, so it has an advanced formula and long-lasting quality. It is more effective in high-speed bikes, long route travel or sports bikes.

Advantages:

Good performance even at high temperatures

The engine heats up less.

Lasts a long time (oil change interval is long)

Less friction in the engine, resulting in increased life.

Disadvantages:

The price is high. Extra costs for very old or low-power bikes

So which one to use?

Recommended engine oil according to your bike and riding style

Normal 100–125 cc bikes: Mineral oil on city routes

Mid-range (150–200 cc): Occasional long rides Semi-synthetic

Sports Bikes, Over 200cc: Frequent Long Rides Full Synthetic Oil

Old bike: Mineral or heavy grade mineral
