Distinguished educationist Professor D. Muhammad Rezaul Haque is no more

 


Published: 07 February 2026 : Former principal of Carmichael College and convener of Rangpur University Implementation Coordination Council, eminent educationist Professor Dr. Muhammad Rezaul Haque is no more.

He breathed his last at 9 am on Saturday (February 7) at Rangpur Community Medical College Hospital. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un. At the time of his death, he was suffering from various old-age related diseases including pneumonia and diabetes. Bangla Academy Assistant Director Abid Karim Munna confirmed the matter. He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters, along with numerous admirers.

When the news of his death spread, a deep shadow of grief fell on the literary and cultural circles of Rangpur. According to local cultural activists, in his death, the future generation lost an invaluable guide. His creativity, humanity and cultural leadership will be remembered by the people of Rangpur for a long time.

This enlightened man was born on 18 February 1934 in the traditional Mia house of Chilmari, Kurigram. He spent most of his childhood and adolescence in Chilmari. He matriculated with first division from Chilmari English High School in 1950 and passed his ISC from Carmichael College in 1952. Later, he secured second place in the second class in the graduation (honors) examination in the Bengali department from Rajshahi College and third place in the second class in the postgraduate examination from Dhaka University. In 1977, he was officially nominated for a PhD and completed his research work at the University of Calcutta, India.

Professor Dr. Muhammad Rezaul Haque's colorful career began in 1958 by joining Madanmohan College in Sylhet. His government service career began by joining Dhaka Science College on 8 August 1961. From 1966 to 1977, he taught at Carmichael College. After completing his PhD, he was the head of the Bengali department of Carmichael College from 1981 to 1984. After that, he served as the principal of Gaibandha Government College and Dinajpur Government College. In 1990, he returned to his beloved campus, Carmichael College, as the principal and retired from there in 1991. During his career, he received offers to become an advisor to the Ministry of Culture and the principal of Jagannath College, but he did not accept them due to his love for the teaching profession. Besides teaching, he used to write regularly. His research book was published by Bangla Academy in 1989. His poetry collection 'Shokatur Sangat' was published in 1991. In addition, numerous articles and poems of his have been published in various newspapers and magazines. His first poem titled 'Hathat' was written while he was in the eighth grade.

His role was prominent in the movement to establish a university in Rangpur. The “Rangpur University Implementation Coordination Council” was formed at his instigation. As a result of a long movement under his able leadership, ‘Rangpur University’ was established in 2008, which is currently known as Begum Rokeya University.

In his personal life, he was a successful parent. His only son works as an engineer in a large private company. The elder daughter lives in Sri Lanka with her husband and the younger daughter works as a doctor in BIRDEM.
