'China's gift hospital will have 500 general beds and 500 specialized beds'

Published: 11 April 2026 : Secretary of the Health Services Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Md. Kamruzzaman Chowdhury, said that out of the 1,000-bed hospital to be built in Nilphamari, 500 beds will be general and 500 beds will be specialized. Our four engineering departments, Public Works, Health Engineering Department, Architecture Department and NAPD, will discuss the technical aspects and prepare a thematic design for us. Accordingly, the report along with the recommendations of the committee formed will be submitted to the Prime Minister's Office by the 16th.

He made these remarks while talking to reporters at the Deputy Commissioner's conference room after inspecting the site designated for the 1,000-bed Bangladesh-China Friendship General Hospital, a gift from China, at the textile field in Nilphamari on Friday (April 10) afternoon.

The Health Secretary further said, there is an airport in Nilphamari, it can be an international airport. There is train and rail connectivity here. Which can be further developed. There is a highway for road connectivity here. We want to convey the benefits of the overall communication structure to the people. Apart from this, I think communication with the SAARC region from here will be easy. In that case, this area will be a medical hub and a center of excellence. We have recommended this place considering that too.

There are about 25 million people in 16 districts in this area. We have done some surveys. We are looking at cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, all these diseases here, we are taking data. For the last five years, two years, we have been taking all this data about what kind of patients go to Dhaka or go to Rajshahi city or go outside. We have noticed that a very large circle of patients go outside from the Khulna region. So, considering everything, we have determined this place.

At this time, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services, Professor Dr. Prabhat Chandra Biswas, Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md. Shahidul Islam, DIG of Rangpur Range Md. Aminul Islam, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Nairuzzaman, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Md. Saidul Islam, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department Md. Sakiuzzaman and a high-level delegation were present.
